What to verify before you go

The Europe guide is available now in PDF, paperback and Kindle formats. Always verify time-sensitive information directly with official sources before your trip.

ETIAS travel authorisation

ETIAS is not currently in operation and applications are not yet being accepted. The European Union currently expects ETIAS to begin in the last quarter of 2026, but the exact launch date has not yet been announced. Check the official EU ETIAS site before travel and do not pay unofficial third-party sites to apply.

Official ETIAS information

EU Entry/Exit System (EES)

The EU Entry/Exit System is now operational for short-stay non-EU travelers crossing participating European external borders. The system electronically records entry and exit information and may require biometric registration. Check the official EU information before travel.

Official EU EES information

Schengen Area entry rules

The 90/180-day Schengen rule applies to most non-EU passport holders. Verify current rules for your nationality before travel.

Official entry & arrival resources

Entry rules and digital arrival systems differ by country and can change after publication. Always check the official government source for your nationality, route and travel dates. Do not pay a third-party website merely to submit a free government arrival form.

Use official government domains. Fake or paid look-alike arrival-card and visa sites exist.

Australia — current information

Australia Working Holiday Maker changes

Announced 17 September 2026

The Australian Government has announced a major change for backpackers seeking a second or third Working Holiday Maker year.

What is changing

The regional and specified-work thresholds themselves have not changed: the second-year pathway still requires 88 days of eligible work and the third-year pathway still requires six months.

What is changing is what happens after that work is completed. The Government has announced ballots for years two and three, rather than the work requirement automatically leading to another Working Holiday Maker year. The announced limits are 45,000 places for year two and 5,000 places for year three.

Important exceptions and context

This should not be confused with the separate rule that generally limits Working Holiday Maker holders to six months with one employer. Current exemptions and permission pathways can apply.

UK passport holders have different subclass 417 arrangements and do not have the normal specified-work requirement for second and third visas when they meet the UK rules.

The ballot reform is new and implementation details are still being rolled out. If you plan to work in Australia or stay beyond your first Working Holiday Maker year, check the Australian Department of Home Affairs immediately before relying on any extension plan.
